Chapter 41

Laney hurried into the kitchen, followed by David and Yair, although Yair only passed through, heading toward the front of the house.

Glancing at the tunic on the table as Sylvia was putting away her tools, Laney could feel her excitement growing. “What did you find?”

Jen pointed to the spot she had noticed earlier. “This is actually a coat of arms. It shows up under infrared.”

Sylvia took a seat at the counter and pulled up an image on the screen of a laptop. “Look here. This will give you a better picture.”

Onscreen, the coat of arms was faint. Sylvia hit a few keys, and it came out in starker relief. Then she slid off the stool. “I will leave you now. My work is completed.”

“Thank you, Sylvia, for everything,” Laney said.

“You are very welcome. And Dr. Witt, if you are ever interested in increasing your skills, let me know. I am looking for an apprentice.”

“Thank you, Sylvia,” Jen said.

With a regal inclination of her head, Sylvia slipped from the room. Jen watched her go. “I want to be her when I grow up.”

“Me too,” David said. “Now, back to the business at hand.”

They all turned their attention back to the screen. The cross on the shield was clear. Laney squinted, trying to make it out more clearly. It looked like feathers of some sort along the sides and at the top. “Is that a knight’s helmet?”

“Yes,” Jen said excitedly. “It’s amazing, the detail.”

David took a snapshot of it and quickly did an image search. A result popped up only seconds later. His eyebrows rose in surprise. “That was fast. Oh, it’s a known coat of arms.”

“What family does it belong to?”

“The St. Clairs.”

Laney frowned. That name sounded familiar. She turned to the laptop and did a quick search for Templars and St. Clair.

And she got a hit.

“Well?” Jen asked.

“St. Clair was the name of a rather famous suspected Templar: William St. Clair, the architect of the Knights Templar church.”

David frowned. “The Knights Templar church? What is that?”

“The Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland,” Laney said.
